118 roadworks schemes to be completed before Christmas

The Highways Agency plans to complete over 500 miles of roadworks before December 23rd to ease travel over the Christmas period, reports Fresh Business Thinking.

It has pledged that 118 roadwork projects on the country's A roads and motorways will be finished ahead of the Christmas weekend, with several other lane restrictions suspended until January 3rd.

Temporary traffic lights and lane restrictions will only remain where they are necessary for driver safety. This includes widening work on the M25 and M1 near Luton.

It is hoped that the move will make travelling during the festive period far more easy for Britain's motorists, especially after the Highways Agency has issued several weather warnings for the next week; telling motorists about expected icy conditions. It recommends drivers thoroughly plan their journey before setting out; packing warm clothing and an emergency kit.

However if motorists remain in any doubt about the capability of their own car under extreme conditions, they could opt for 4x4 hire over the Christmas period; helping them to travel safely through the snow and ice.

Commenting on the Highways Agency's announcement, transport secretary Justine Greening told hgvuk.com: "Christmas is one of the busiest times on our roads and that's why we will be completing or lifting roadworks wherever possible to help people get back to see their families and loved ones.

"More that 98 per cent of the strategic road network will be roadworks free, meaning that more lanes will be open and many speed restrictions lifted."
