Brits urged not to lie about past claims
Brits have been advised not to hide details of any driving penalties when taking out car hire, or face huge repercussions.
Many people with points on their licence choose to deny their existence when hiring a car in the hope that their policy will be cheaper or that they will not have to pay a deposit. However, a new report published by an independent price comparison site has suggested that hiding penalties could actually end up doing more harm than good, journalism.co.uk reports.
Most companies will ask you to declare penalty points when hiring a car and lying about it is actually illegal, meaning that anybody who does is not only facing a void insurance policy but will also be breaking the law.
Speaking to newswiretoday.com, insurance and car hire expert Gareth Robinson explained how he wanted "motorists at large to be aware that keeping knowledge of points back from insurers is not a clever idea; however much insurance costs might be on the rise these days.
"If you find your policy is void and you're not insured you can be liable for costly expenses on things like other car damage, medical expenses, legal fees et cetera. These costs can end up being far higher than any additional price you would have to pay on a policy in the first place by being honest about points on your licence."
So whilst lying about points may feel like a shrewd business move on the surface, it could turn out to be much more costly in the long run.
