Morrisons drop fuel prices as supermarkets wage war

The global financial crisis may have left some in tears, but drivers may be rejoicing as the cost of crude oil continues to drop; leading some supermarkets to drop their prices even further.

According to thisismoney.co.uk, Morrisons will be cutting another 2p per litre from its prices from today, with Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's and more expected to follow suit.

Motorists have been warned about the dangers of hitting the roads with low fuel after a survey revealed that an increasing amount of Brits are 'driving on empty.'

Miranda Schunke, of breakdown service Green Flag, is worried about the amount of drivers who are risking their safety by starting a journey despite the car issuing a low fuel warning.

Hampshire drivers reassured over fuel strike

Motorists in Hampshire have been offered reassurance following the news that fuel tanker drivers may strike.

According to The News, Army drivers are being trained so that they can safely distribute petrol to outlets from sources such as Fawley refinery near Southampton.The plans put in place by Portsmouth City Council should be a relief to business car hire customers and other commuters, but a representative from the local authority stressed that one of the priorities for fuel would be the emergency services.

Day trippers mostly head out to eat and see family

Food has been cited as the reason why 250 million people in the UK jumped into a car and went on a day trip in 2011.

VisitBritain asked 38,000 people what motivated them to go for a day trip in the last seven days. Whilst visiting friends or family accounted for 350 million trips, heading out to visit a restaurant or cafe was attributed to 250 million. 

These are significant figures, considering that Big Hospitality confirmed some 1.5 billion day trips were taken in 2011.

June-like temperatures to hit the South by Friday

Despite a chilly start to the week, temperatures in the UK are set to soar to heights of 17C by the end of the week - rivalling those felt in a typical June.

Mail Online reports that warm southerly winds from the Azores - a volcanic region situated in the middle of the North Atlantic - will sweep over the nation, banishing recent memories of the cold.

It says that the weather will be particularly welcome in several places in the UK which have just experienced yet another "white weekend", including Herefordshire, Worcestshire, Cheshire, Cumbria and North Wales.

Research highlights terrible state of UK railways

The poor performance of British railways has been highlighted by a new report from think tank Just Economics.

According to The Independent, the country's rail network suffers hugely in comparison with every other European nation, finishing bottom of several league tables.

The report read: "In terms of bang for buck, not only does the UK come bottom of the index of outcomes but it also spends a relatively large amount of money to achieve this woeful result. This means that it also comes bottom of the value for money league."

Ministers warming to idea of new London airport

Proposals to place a new airport in the London Thames Estuary are beginning to win favour at Number 10, according to sources close to the prime minster.

The Daily Telegraph says that David Cameron is expected to provisionally support the development of a new airport - which is due to be build on recovered land - when the proposal goes into official consultation in March.

Supporters of the scheme, which include London Mayor Boris Johnson, argue that a new inner city airport would serve as a great alternative to creating new runways at Heathrow or Gatwick. Plans for the these have previously been vetoed by government.

Car insurance premiums soar

Increasing car insurance claims could drive more motorists to consider long term car hire.

MPs from a Transport Select Committee have heard that the rising number of motorists claiming on their insurance for whiplash following an accident has seen premiums in some areas rise four times more than the rate of inflation, guardian.co.uk reports.

Research by price comparison site confused.com found that on average, insurance policies in the UK are 4.9 per cent more expensive than this time last year. In the North the figure is even higher, with Bradford reporting rises of as much as 17.1 per cent.

The number of motorists keen to own their car has been predicted to fall in the coming years, reports BBC News.

Business reporter Jorn Madslien described how this is one of several forecasts in a new KPMG survey of global car company executives, with other key issues being the way automobiles are powered and how connected they are technologically.

The document stated: "The world is moving from car ownership to car usership." This emphasis on temporary use of vehicles could inspire more interest in business car hire and alternative rental options.

Motorists should check batteries to prevent breaking down

 

Today has been hailed the "busiest day for breakdowns", The Independent reports.

People attempting to drive back to work following an extended Christmas break should check their batteries in advance of their journey - that's the advice of two breakdown recovery companies.

Green Flag has highlighted that cars are far more likely to break down in the winter and as a result, they are expecting 50 per cent more calls today, due to flat batteries. The AA is anticipating 15,500 calls from stranded motorists.
