Deparment of Transport issues driving tips

The UK's transport minister Norman Baker has issued driving tips that could help those taking out car hire save a packet this summer.

Ranging from driving smoothly to changing gear at the right time, the Department for Transport (DfT) is keen to push an economic motoring message on holiday drivers.

According to a 7thSpace.com press release, Baker claimed that in a single 500 mile trip, families could save around £10 - "enough for a few extra ice creams to keep the kids happy!" he says. The advice could be helpful for those heading to the nearby continent. For example with regards to car hire, Portsmouth to France has always been an popular route for a week away.

Tyre pressures are one of the first things that should be checked said the DfT, according to HonestJohn.co.uk. Under inflated tyres are not only dangerous, but they are also a major cause of increased fuel consumption.

Pressures have to be adjusted accordingly depending on the load that is put on to them too. Caravans and trailers can impact on the strain of each tyre resulting in quicker deflation. The same applies for the weight inside the vehicle itself.

To maximise fuel efficiency, all unnecessary items should be removed from the vehicle before setting off.

Keeping an eye on speed is also a must. Cars burn 25 per cent more fuel over 85mph than they do at speeds of 70mph. Families should always ensure that they leave enough time for their journeys and should additionally be mindful of domestic speed laws.

Following these tips could save a fortune, Baker said: "For many families, the annual holiday will be the longest trip they make all year. Applying the simple smarter driving techniques could make a real difference to fuel costs."
