Asda to reduce fuel prices

Supermarket giant Asda has once again slashed its fuel prices in a bid to see off the competition, according to Press Association.

By cutting its fuel prices by up to 2p a litre, the Walmart-owned giant brings its total cuts down 4p a litre over the last three weeks. As a result, drivers filling up at Asda's forecourts from Friday will now pay from as little as 136.7p a litre for petrol and 141.7p a litre for diesel.

Train users warned to expect Bank Holiday delays

Rail users are being urged to consider alternative travel methods over the upcoming Bank Holiday, as delays are expected to hit the trains, metro.co.uk reports.

Nine million people are expected to use the rail network over the May Day holiday, although many can expect delays. Not only will the volume of users cause delays, but operational works between London and Scotland are expected to slow journeys down by around an hour each way.

Ford launches 'next-generation' Transit Custom

Ford has showcased its new Transit Custom at the CV Show in Birmingham, fleetnews.co.uk writes.

The launch of the van ties in with Ford's pledge to refresh its entire range of commercial vehicles over the next three years. More, larger models, Ford says, will be unveiled by the end of 2012.

New bus service lambasted by locals

Commuters have voiced their disappointment at a new "rapid" bus route between Fareham and Gosport that is actually slower than its predecessor.

Many locals were looking forward to the unveiling of the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route, which was billed to be able to bypass congestion on the A32.

IAM aims to increase driver awareness of bikes

A poll has found that being complacent behind the wheel and failing to look properly causes 29 per cent of serious accidents, trl.co.uk reports. 

Almost a third of motorists admitted to causing serious collisions due to their lack of awareness of other road users, such as 'vulnerable' cyclists. 52 per cent of respondents to the Institute of Advanced Motorists' (IAM) survey said that they had experienced a near miss with a motorbike due to 'not seeing' it.

New van registrations stall

New van registrations slumped significantly in March, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Registrations fell 11.1 per cent from 44,074 units to 39,167, leaving fewer new vans on the road last month, reports Fleet News.

Threat of Easter weekend fuel strike averted

There was a rush of people filling up their cars with petrol last week after the government urged consumers to take precautionary action, but those worries have now been put to bed after the union Unite confirmed delivery drivers would not strike over the public holiday.

According to Reuters, the organisation decided against industrial action as it wants to concentrate on talks with haulage contractors about  working conditions, which have allegedly been eroded in recent years. Contract van hire customers and other motorists are likely to be pleased, as Easter is one of the most busy weekends on UK roads.

Easter weekend drivers handed travel boost

Those planning on driving over the Easter weekend have been handed some good news - the Highways Agency has vowed to clear or suspend more than 90 per cent of current roadworks.

Workers are set to tackle maintenance faster than usual to complete 700 miles of work before the weekend begins, while a further 45 miles will be suspended from April 5th - 10th to prevent a build-up of traffic.

Jerrycans advice slammed by Fire Brigade

A senior MP made 'a mistake' by telling motorists to fill jerrycans with petrol to avoid a fuel shortage, BBC News reports.

Following yesterday's accusations that the government has scare-mongered the public into panic-buying fuel ahead of the threatened fuel tanker drivers' strike, it has now emerged that advice dispensed by cabinet member, Francis Maude, was irresponsible.

Hampshire drivers reassured over fuel strike

Motorists in Hampshire have been offered reassurance following the news that fuel tanker drivers may strike.

According to The News, Army drivers are being trained so that they can safely distribute petrol to outlets from sources such as Fawley refinery near Southampton.The plans put in place by Portsmouth City Council should be a relief to business car hire customers and other commuters, but a representative from the local authority stressed that one of the priorities for fuel would be the emergency services.

BMW drivers warned of battery fault that could cause fire

BMW drivers could be on the lookout for business car hire deals as the manufacturer has recalled 1.3 million vehicles.

German manufacturer BMW has announced it is recalling some of its 5 and 6 series models after it was reported that a problem with the battery could, in extreme cases, result in a fire, BBC News reports.

Parking fines to remain static during London Olympics

Proposals to inflate parking fines for traffic offences during the London Olympic Games have been dismissed by the Department for Transport (DfT).

LBC 97.3FM reports that the DfT is rejecting calls made by games organisers, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), which proposed to increase fines from £130 to £200 during the two-week spectacle.

If implemented, the move could have seen drivers facing higher charges for flouting parking rules around the Olympic Park and Greenwich, or for using so-called express 'Games Lanes'.
