Hampshire Police call on 4x4 drivers this winter

Hampshire Constabulary is appealing to 4x4 drivers to sign up for a volunteer rescue programme in the instance of bad weather this winter.

In an attempt to avoid the chaos that plagued many elderly and vulnerable residents in the snow last year, Hampshire Constabulary, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service the Hampshire County Council are today meeting in Netley to officially launch the new 4x4 Volunteers scheme.

Even those who are in possession of a hardy vehicle as part of a 4x4 hire contract could play a "significant role in supporting the work of emergency responders," says Ian Hoult, who chairs the Community Resilience Group, according to IslandPulse.co.uk.

Sergeant Phil Lamb, from the Police Support Volunteer Scheme, adds that the force is looking for experienced motorists only. All volunteers will require a clean driving licence and have at least three years driving experience. Applicants are also expected to be available to help at short notice at different times of the day.

"It is difficult to say exactly how much time you'll need to give up to the cause, but volunteers will be asked to come and help during times of critical need such as extreme weather," said Lamb, reports Heart.co.uk.

"If we have another winter like last year, with a repeat of the extreme ice and snow conditions, our resources will be severely stretched, and that is when drivers will be put to good use helping out those in need and transporting vulnerable members of our community."

In return, motorists will be refunded their mileage costs and and out-of-pocket expenses, he added.
